As “The Artist” (2011) appears to move relentlessly toward the Academy Award for Best Picture, it’s interesting to trace how it came to be the favored frontrunner.

The critics began choosing their best picture winners at award ceremonies in New York late last year, and others weighed in across the country, in Canada, and internationally.
