Could Angelina Jolie Win Best Director Oscar for ‘In the Land of Blood and Honey’?

Angelina Jolie may not win a Best Director Oscar for her new film “In the Land of Blood and Honey” because only four women in the history of the Academy Awards have been nominated in that category.

‘Addiction Incorporated’ Shows How Smoking in the Movies Has Changed

Smoking in the movies used to mean sexy sophistication. Ava Gardner and Gregory Peck from the film "The Snows of Kilimanjaro."

‘Addiction Incorporated’ Shows How Smoking in the Movies Has Changed

In “Addiction Incorporated,” a documentary opening this weekend, a whistle-blower at the Philip Morris tobacco company discovers an addictive ingredient in cigarettes and fights for federal regulation of the industry.  It is a testament to how far smoking onscreen has changed over the years.

Compare that to what many acknowledge as the sexiest scene in Hollywood history:  In “Now Voyager” (1942), Paul Henreid lights not just one but two cigarettes and then hands one to his lover Bette Davis in a gloriously back-lit, smoke-filled haze, amid a rising crescendo of innuendo-laden music.

We’ve come a long way, baby.   – read more –

Topics: 1) JLo’s divorce, 2) Free birth control for all?, 3) Sugar! 4) Celebs in the news, 5) Drew Doughty, L.A. Kings

The Mary & Tracy Show: Commentary on Current Events

by Mary Tracy Show

Topics we discussed on this show:

1) Jlo’s Divorce

Jennifer Lopez and her husband Marc Antony are divorcing after seven years of marriage.  No one knows the reason why, but rumors are he wanted her to dress more matronly.  Yes, because apparently he was unaware she’s a huge sex symbol.

2) Free Birth Control for All?

A group of Doctors are recommending birth control for all in health care coverage.  Since Viagra is covered, why not this?  What are the pros and cons?

3) Sugar!

A new report indicates simple sugar may help speed heart attack recovery.   Any news that says sugar is good for you attracts our attention!  We segue into a great discussion of sugar substitutes such as agave,  stevia, aspartame and others.  Which one is best?

4) Celebs in the news

Britney Spears‘ bodyguard is suing her for being too smelly and messy.  Lindsay Lohan can’t afford psychological testing.  Tiger Wood fired his long-time caddy.  These celebs can’t stay out of the news!

5)  Drew Doughty, L.A. Kings Hockey Team

The big news in hockey right now is Drew Doughty has become an unrestricted free agent.  Will he re-sign with the Kings or go elsewhere?  We make predictions!

Radio Topics: 1) Debt Wars in Washington 2) Rupert Murdoch & Freedom of the Press 3) Emmy Nominations

The Mary & Tracy Show: Commentary on Current Events

by Mary Tracy Show

Topics we discussed on this show:

President Barack Obama with Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA). Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY), Sen. Joh Kyl (R-AZ), Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.) during Budget negotiations

 1) Debt Wars in Washington

Its all about the art of the deal, as President Obama and Congressional leaders try to raise the debt limit so we don’t default as a nation, and more important, we make sure social security and medicare checks go out to our elderly next month.  A new poll shows Americans will blame the Republicans if we default on the debt.  Time to eat your peas, Tea Party-ers.

2) Rupert Murdoch and Freedom of the Press

Richard Bond

Rupert Murdoch owns major media in the U.S., Britain and other countries, including the Wall Street Journal and Fox News, and he’s not shy about trying to influence elections here or abroad.  People have been afraid to speak out for years, but the dam broke this week.  It turns out his minions have been hacking cell phones belonging to dead children, dead soldiers, and possibly even families of 9/11 victims here in New York.  The FBI is now investigating.  What are the implications for the U.S.?

3) Emmy Nominations

Our favorites, “Mad Men” and “Boardwalk Empire” are nominated, as is “Dexter” and Betty White, Julianne Margulies and a host of reality shows.  Are yours?  If you had to choose, who would you vote for: John Hamm or Steven Buscemi? Betty White or Sophia Vergara?  How about Peter Dinklage or Chris Colfer? Lots of tough decisions this year!

Radio Topics: 1) Glen Campbell & Alzheimer’s, 2) Free Speech & Tracy Morgan, John Galliano, SW Airlines Pilot

The Mary & Tracy Show: Commentary on Current Events

by Mary Tracy Show

Topics we discussed on this show:

 1) Glen Campbell and Alzheimer’s disease:

Reports are swirling that he will continue his tour.  Will he be able to put a face to the tragedy so many are suffering from these days?  Also, don’t forget about the caretakers!

 2) Freedom of Speech:  Did Tracy Morgan, John Galliano and the Southwest Airlines pilot go too far?

Tracy Morgan, John Galliano of the House of Dior, and a Southwest Airlines pilot ranted against gays, Jews and women, respectively, this week.  Are we being too politically correct about it?  Should these ranters face criminal charges, as John Galliano is as he undergoes a trial in France for his diatribe against a Jewish couple having tea near his apartment.
