Hollywood Landmarks: the 1929 Villa Bonita Building

The Villa Bonita building on Hillcrest Road in Hollywood, built in 1929 and recently sold for $4.35 million, represents a memorable period in the heyday of old Hollywood. Commissioned by famed director Cecil B. DeMille, this classic building helped house numerous employees of the motion picture industry over the years from Errol Flynn to Francis Ford Coppola. It is located in a historic area at the base of the Hollywood Hills and is designated a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural monument.

Hillcrest Road in Hollywood Heights is in a charming hillside setting at the base of an upward sloping street. This area creates an entry for elite residential homes in the Hollywood Hills to the north. The iconic 25-unit ivy-covered Villa Bonita is located at the base of the Hills, directly north and slightly west of the famous intersection at Hollywood and Highland, above Franklin Avenue. There are tons of Hollywood landmarks nearby, including Mann’s Chinese Theatre, the Hollywood Bowl and the Magic Castle. Seven stories high, it is easily the highest building in the residential area.

  1. The Villa Bonita is horribly mismanaged by JEMCO. It’s been cited several times by the L.A. County Health Department. There has been an ongoing infestation of bedbugs and cockroches. Terrible shame JEMCO has let this historic landmark building go. They try and dupe tenants into the exterior charm and not disclose the filth and infestations on the inside.
